The Fourth International Summit of Civil Society Actors D�sertif'actions was held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, from 19 to 22 June 2019 and brought together more than 380 participants from some 40 countries, representing 230 multi-stakeholder organizations: grassroots communities, NGOs, scientists, local authorities, international organizations, private and public sector actors....This year, 4 thematic axes are proposed: the Great Green Wall Initiative, pastoralism, land and multi-use of water. D�sertif'actions was organized by the CARI association (member of Agropolis International), the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, the Permanent Secretariat of Non-Governmental Organizations.

This association has been existing for 54 years already and has organized regularly conferences on coffee science trying to alternate coffee producing and consuming countries.This conference represents a unique opportunity to gather specialists (research institutes, universities, coffee industry and coffee professionals�) from all over the world working to face several important challenges (sustainability, climate change, quality, health�). Patrick Caron elected President of Agropolis International

The unanimous election of Patrick Caron by the Agropolis International Executive Board on 9 May (2019) was just endorsed by the association's Board of Directors on 13 June. His term as President will run until December 2021. Patrick Caron has been a CIRAD researcher for 30 years and Vice President for International Relations at the University of Montpellier since February 2019, while being International Director of the Montpellier University of Excellence MUSE I-Site project since July 2017 (https://muse.edu.umontpellier.fr). He has been Chairman of the High Level Panel of Experts (HLPE) of the United Nations Committee on World Food Security (CFS) since October 2015. He is founding Director of the Montpellier Advanced Knowledge Institute on Transitions (MAK'IT, https://muse.edu.umontpellier.fr/presentation/international/makeit). He was formerly General Director for Research and Strategy at CIRAD (July 2010 - July 2016).The Agropolis International Board of Directors is delighted with this new appointment, which will strengthen international and national recognition of Agropolis International as one of the world's leading players in the development-oriented agricultural research field. Patrick Caron succeeds Jean-Luc Khalfaoui, who has been President since January 2018 and who has joined the Agreenium team as an international project manager.

The 4th International Conference on Global Food Security addresses the topic of food security at all spatial levels from local to global, and from an interdisciplinary and systemic food systems perspective. It aims to better understand environmental, nutritional, agricultural, demographic, socio-economic, political, technological and institutional drivers, costs and outcomes of current and future food security. Interactions with contextual factors including climate change, urbanisation, greening the economy and data-driven technologies will be central. The conference addresses the triple burden of malnutrition: hunger, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity. It explores the state-of-the-art of interdisciplinary insight, addresses the trade-offs that occur - and synergies that can be sought -in transforming food systems. These are aimed at reconciling the competing environmental, economic or social objectives and outcomes towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals at different levels across spatial and temporal scales. Contributions which bridge themes or scales, foster interdisciplinarity and integration or address interactions between science and non-academic stakeholders (civil society, private sector and policy makers) are particularly welcome. Montpellier Declaration: �Make Our Planet Treed Again�, published on 24 May during the 4th World Congress on Agroforestry

Over a thousand experts from a hundred countries meeting in Montpellier, France, for the 4th World Congress on Agroforestry called for a �transformative change' to tackle the disastrous impacts on our planet of the global food system.Agroforestry, they agreed, was crucial to that effort. The event was organized by CIRAD and INRA, in partnership with World Agroforestry (ICRAF), Agropolis International and Montpellier University of Excellence. According to Christian Dupraz, Scientific Chair of the Congress and INRA Research Director: �After the worldwide move towards simplified and artificialized agricultural systems which came with many unintended negative consequences agroforestry embraces complexity in agricultural systems�. "Faced with this complexity, we may feel that the more we learn, the less we know. This is why we need to collaborate and encourage transverse collaborations on all levels", said Tristan Lecomte, Chair of PUR PROJET, at the concluding session of the Congress. It is important that tomorrow's agriculture mimics the processes of natural ecosystems so that some of the services that nature once gave us can be provided by agriculture. "Agroforestry can take up this challenge", concludes Emmanuel Torquebiau, Agroforestry Project Manager at CIRAD and Chair of the Organizing Committee of the Congress.

NGOs, Scientifics, local communities, international institutions, private and public sector� every layers of civil society is gathering at Ouagadougou to debate and share their respective positions on land degradation through desertification combat, biodiversity protection, adaptation to climate change and the consequences that come from these challenges in every part of the world. For the first time in Africa, this unique multi-actors manifestation brings together 300 participants from all around the world during 4 days. For this edition, 4 themed workshops are proposed: the Great Green Wall Initiative, pastoralism, land property & neutrality, multi usages of water. iCROPM2020 - Second International Crop Modelling Symposium (iCROPM2020)/Crop modelling for Agriculture and Food Security under Global Change February 03, 2020 to February 05, 2020 - MontpellierThe Second International Crop Modelling Symposium (iCROPM2020) will be held February 3-5, 2020 in Montpellier, France. Four years after the 1st International Crop Modelling Symposium in Berlin (iCROPM2016), crop modelers from around the world will meet at the iCROPM2020 Symposium in Montpellier, France to exchange on advances in crop modelling and identify challenges and new opportunities for future research. iCROPM2020 will focus on recent improvements and applications of crop simulation models to better support agricultural production and food security under global change. All types of crops and cropping systems (arable, grasslands, intercrops) and world regions will be considered, including high and low inputs systems, with relevance for large agricultural enterprises to smallholder farmers. Laying a strong foundation for a joint plan of action between CGIAR and France to strengthen the ongoing partnership The French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI, Paris), hosted the signature event of a joint declaration to reinforce scientific collaboration by several members of Agropolis International: Cirad, INRA, IRD, Irstea, Agreenium and CGIAR on the 22nd of March 2019 at the meeting of high-level officials of the International Commission for Agricultural Research (CRAI). Central to this declaration was the identification of joint actions that focus on three major scientific themes: agriculture and climate change, agroecology and nutrition and sustainable food system. Review of the visit of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) to Montpellier (04-07 March 2019): signing of a cooperation agreement Agropolis International organised, from 04 to 07 March 2019, the hosting of a delegation from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) to strengthen and develop the partnership with the Montpellier scientific community. Based in Beijing and created in 1957, CAAS has more than 6,000 researchers, scientists and technicians and many renowned academics focusing mainly on science and technology for the agricultural sector and rural development in China. It is developing a very active international policy, particularly towards African countries.On this occasion, CAAS management was able to discuss with the CGIAR and the 4/1000 Initiative, visit several units of the scientific community and their structures (UMR AGAP, UMR Eco & Sols, UMR AIDA, UMR Ecotron platform, large greenhouse in Lavalette campus), discuss with CIRAD management and sign a framework agreement with the I-Site Muse. This framework agreement aims to:- organize, program and implement joint educational or scientific projects;- exchange scientific, technical and educational information and organise joint seminars, symposia and conferences;

- jointly sign publications and promote the results of research;- respond jointly to national, regional and international calls for tenders and seek national and international funding;- sharing scientific resources and/or equipment: facilities for research, education and information purposes.

To support the development of the partnership between I-Site MUSE and CAAS, the framework agreement provides for the installation of a laboratory without CAAS walls in Montpellier hosted and supported by Agropolis International. An original international collaboration mechanism with Montpellier's research and teaching institutions, and also at the European level.
